Real Voices: Oliver Thomas

With support from various mentors, I have progressed to where I am today

I was working for a local haulage firm on weekends, cleaning the workshop and cleaning vehicles. I asked if there were any jobs full-time or apprenticeships available. Due to personal reasons, I left work to help at home.

I then started with Celvac (Celtic Vacuum) and started at Cardiff and Vale College in the September. With support from various mentors within Celvac and my college, I have progressed to where I am today. I have always enjoyed cars, and then being able to work on larger vehicles has inspired me even more.

I have faced many challenges over the last few years, my main challenge has been lacking confidence in my decisions.

Being involved in the IMI Skills Competition  has been very nerve-wracking, but enjoyable at the same time. I have gained so much confidence. Being alongside likeminded people has shown me what the quality of our trade should be like.

Along with being a confidence builder, it has cemented my role within the company as an established mechanic and it backs up my qualification. It proves I am serious about the role and I am keen to keep learning with my current organisation.
