This role offers the chance to be at the heart of innovation in transport technology
Efficient, low-emission public transport is essential to building a greener future and achieving net zero goals. Bus & Coach Technicians are the skilled professionals who keep these vital networks running, playing a key role in both environmental sustainability and economic resilience.
As a Bus & Coach Technician, you’ll work exclusively on large passenger vehicles from a range of manufacturers, ensuring they operate safely, reliably, and in line with evolving green standards. With fleets increasingly transitioning to electric and hybrid models, this role offers the chance to be at the heart of innovation in transport technology.
Key responsibilities include:
- Carrying out scheduled maintenance in line with manufacturer and fleet specifications to ensure optimal performance and safety.
- Using specialist tools and equipment for heavy vehicles, including lifts, power tools, and extraction systems, with a strong focus on safety and precision.
- Diagnosing faults and system issues, using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques to identify and resolve problems efficiently.
- Disassembling and reassembling mechanical and electrical systems, including testing, replacing, or refitting components to restore full functionality.
- Conducting safety inspections and producing detailed reports, outlining completed checks and planning future maintenance schedules.
As vehicle technology continues to evolve, this role offers ongoing opportunities to develop new skills, particularly in electric drivetrains, battery systems, and smart diagnostics.
Continuous professional development (CPD) is essential, and achieving IMI TechSafe accreditation demonstrates that your competence in working safely with electric and hybrid vehicles meets recognised industry standards.
This is more than a technical role; it’s a chance to be a driving force in the transition to cleaner, smarter transport systems, helping towns and cities move forward sustainably.
Real Voice
“I started my apprenticeship just after leaving school. I was always interested in working with
my hands and an apprenticeship seemed like the right path for me. I have always been interested in cars and had fixed my own and helped fix family members cars, before I’d even applied for an apprenticeship. That experience of fixing cars pushed me to apply, and when I saw it was a HGV apprenticeship it peaked my interest further. I do not regret my decision as I love every minute of my job.”
