Job Role: Heavy Vehicle Technician

As commercial transport and logistics continue to expand, maintaining the reliability and safety of heavy vehicles is essential to keeping fleets moving. Heavy Vehicle Technicians play a vital role in inspecting, servicing, and repairing trucks, buses, and specialist commercial vehicles to manufacturer and legislative standards.

Working as a Heavy Vehicle Technician involves combining advanced mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic skills with a strong focus on safety and precision. Using specialist tools, diagnostic equipment, and technical data, you will ensure heavy vehicles remain roadworthy, efficient, and ready to meet operational demands for fleet operators, haulage companies, local authorities, and commercial workshops.

Key responsibilities include:

• Conducting routine maintenance and servicing, including inspections, fluid changes, adjustments, and safety checks in accordance with manufacturer schedules and DVSA standards. 
• Diagnosing complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults, using advanced diagnostic tools, wiring diagrams, and technical data for accurate fault-finding. 
• Carrying out repairs and component replacements, such as engines, transmissions, braking systems, suspension, steering, and auxiliary equipment. Inspecting and preparing vehicles for MOT and compliance testing, ensuring all systems meet legal and safety requirements for heavy vehicles. 

• Working with pneumatic, air-brake, and hydraulic systems, ensuring correct operation, adjustment, and repair to maintain safe performance. 
• Documenting all work performed, including repair methods, parts used, inspection outcomes, and diagnostic results for compliance, audit, and customer transparency. 
• Supporting fleet maintenance planning, identifying upcoming repair needs, advising on preventative maintenance, and ensuring downtime is minimised. 
• Following strict health and safety procedures, including safe working practices around heavy equipment, lifting operations, and high-voltage systems where applicable. 
• Collaborating with service advisors, fleet managers, and parts teams to coordinate repairs, source components, and manage job progression effectively.
