“If one of my friends asked me about the automotive industry, for example, someone considering joining this course, it’d tell them to give it a go. I’d be honest; it’s been a very fun process for me.”

I came to Macclesfield College to do an engineering course. This class just didn’t really speak to me properly. I was walking past this classroom and saw one of my friends was in it. I have a passion for cars too, I always have.

I spoke to Lee and he’s a good teacher, and I was able to switch courses. Since then it’s been pretty good.

The best part of the journey has been the hands-on experience with the cars instead of sitting in a classroom just writing stuff down. There is a bit of that, but we get to work on the cars and fix up the faults.

It’s been a very rewarding journey.

The automotive industry is kind of evolving as it goes. We currently have a lot of petrol and diesel cars, but EVs are becoming a lot more common, and we’ve got a hydrogen training vehicle here. I’m quite interested to learn about the online problems that are coming through.

I came into this course quite blind, but through the guidance of Lee, I’ve been enlightened. It’s been very successful.

The automotive industry is not as bad as people think. It’s not as dirty as people think. People have the wrong perception that maybe they’re being sold the wrong stuff or they’re paying too high a price.

If one of my friends asked me about the automotive industry, for example, someone considering joining this course, it’d tell them to give it a go. I’d be honest; it’s been a very fun process for me.

As I said, I didn’t initially want to be in this industry until I came to this college and had a bit of an eye opener. It’s great to have the practical skills. If I have a problem with my own car, I can diagnose it and possibly fix it myself, saving me money.

I’m most excited about learning about EVs and how to work on them, because it’s a very complicated process.

When you actually work on cars, you realise most mechanics are just trying to help people.

My advice to people would be to see what the trade has to offer, rather than deciding based one perception or another.

The community at Macclesfield college is very good. We have great relationships with the teachers. They’re very friendly and know exactly what they’re on about. Between them, they have loads of years in the trade and we learn everything they know. They teach others very well.

I’ve learned a lot from being at this college.
