When working as a Vehicle Technician, you can work on either Light Vehicles (Cars, Motorbikes) or Heavy Vehicles (Trucks, Lorries) and the qualifications you complete will reflect the type of vehicle you work on. As the systems that power are transport are transitioning to include more electrical and hybrid vehicles, Technicians are becoming more specialist and upskilled to work on the new technology that EV/Hybrid vehicles contain.
When working with electric vehicles, you will specialise in diagnosing and fixing faults with new technologies and higher voltage battery systems. Your job could include:
Key responsibilities include:
- Diagnosing faults and system issues, using visual inspections and advanced diagnostic tools, software, and data systems.
- Interpreting system data to identify failures, defective components, or service requirements across electric and hybrid platforms.
- Disassembling and reassembling electrical systems, including testing, replacing, or refitting components such as motors, inverters, and battery modules.
- Conducting safety checks and routine maintenance, including recording data on emissions, mileage, and the safe disposal or recycling of materials.
- Working safely with high-voltage systems, following strict protocols to ensure technician and vehicle safety.
As electric vehicle technology continues to evolve, this role offers continuous professional development (CPD) opportunities in areas such as battery systems, charging infrastructure, and smart diagnostics.
