Automotive is much broader than people think. There are roles for creative thinkers, tech‑minded people, problem‑solvers, communicators, and hands‑on learners.
I never actually set out to work in automotive – in fact, I wasn’t interested in cars at all. What I did love was problem solving. Maths was always my favourite subject at school, and I enjoyed anything that challenged me to think logically and find solutions.
A two-week work experience placement at an engineering company completely changed my direction. It opened my eyes to the world of engineering and showed me how much creativity and real-world impact the field offers. That experience sparked something, leading me to apply for a degree apprenticeship at JLR.
Once I started, everything clicked. As I got more involved, I found myself drawn to the mix of hands on work, technical thinking, and the chance to help people every day. My passion for automotive grew quickly – I realised it wasn’t just about vehicles, but about people, technology, and constant learning. That’s what made me want to stay and build a career here.
Before I joined, I imagined the automotive world would be very traditional and mostly focused on mechanical work. Once I got inside it, I realised it’s far more diverse and forward‑thinking than I expected. There’s a huge emphasis on new technology, customer experience, and continuous learning. It’s not just about cars – it’s about innovation, safety, sustainability, and people.
What I enjoy most about my job is the constant problem solving. I’ve always loved working things out, and automotive gives me the perfect mix of technical challenge and real world impact. There’s something incredibly rewarding about taking a complex issue, breaking it down, and finding a solution that genuinely helps someone.
I also love how much I’m learning. Every project, every system, every new piece of technology pushes me to grow. The industry moves fast, and being part of that momentum keeps me motivated. And beyond the technical side, I really value the people I work with – the teamwork, the support, and the shared drive to make things better. It makes every day feel meaningful.
Day to day, my role is a blend of technical problem solving, hands on engineering, and working closely with different teams across the business. No two days look the same. Some days I’m deep into data, analysing issues and figuring out how to improve systems; other days I’m working on real vehicles, testing solutions, or supporting colleagues to make sure everything runs smoothly.
What often surprises people is just how varied the work is. It’s not just cars, it’s technology, safety, innovation, and collaboration. I spend a lot of time thinking logically, breaking down complex problems, and finding practical ways forward. Communication is a huge part of the job too, whether that’s explaining technical details, working with suppliers, or supporting other engineers.
The skills I use range from analytical thinking and maths to teamwork, creativity, and resilience. There’s a lot of responsibility, especially when the work directly impacts customers and the performance of the vehicles they rely on. But that’s also what makes it exciting – every day brings a new challenge, and every challenge brings a chance to learn.
The automotive sector is changing faster than ever, and that’s exactly what makes it such an exciting place to build a career. We’re seeing huge shifts towards electrification, sustainability, digital diagnostics, and smarter, more connected vehicles. Engineering is becoming more innovative, more data driven, and more collaborative and being part of that transformation feels genuinely energising.
What I love most is that the industry isn’t standing still. Every year brings new technology, new challenges, and new opportunities to learn. For someone who enjoys problem solving, it’s the perfect environment. You’re constantly adapting, thinking differently, and finding better ways to do things. It’s not just about keeping up with change, it’s about helping shape it.
Knowing that the work we do today directly influences the vehicles people will rely on tomorrow makes the sector feel meaningful. It’s a future focused industry, and being part of that evolution is one of the most exciting parts of my job.

Something I’ve learned along the way is that your career doesn’t have to follow the path you expected. I never imagined myself in automotive, and I certainly didn’t grow up with a passion for cars – but leaning into what I was good at, like problem solving and maths, led me somewhere I genuinely love.
My journey has taught me that curiosity can take you further than certainty. Saying yes to a two week work experience placement changed everything. Starting a degree apprenticeship opened doors I didn’t even know existed. And every step since has shown me how much opportunity there is when you’re willing to learn, adapt, and challenge yourself.
I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and even more excited about what’s ahead. If my story shows anything, it’s that you don’t need to fit a stereotype to thrive in automotive – you just need the drive to grow.
